Book Report On 1984 By George Essay -- essays research papers
The book starts off with an interesting first sentence ââ¬Å"the clocks were striking 13.â⬠To me this was unusual because there is no 13 on a clock and it is usually considered an unlucky number. I thought it was kind of weird and different compared to what kind of world we are living in today. This is because in London the province of Oceania is where our first and main character Winston Smith lives. There are signs reminding citizens that Big Brother is always watching. Big Brother is the leader of the party in which Winston is a part of as well as all the people of Oceania. Winston Smith is about 39 and has on ulcer on his left ankle. He had to wear blue overalls as a rule of the party. He lives in Victory Mansions by himself. One vocabulary word that I didnââ¬â¢t know I found on page 6, eddies, which is a current air running contrary to the main current. Also on page 6 I learned that in this place where Winston lives they use what is called a telescreen which watches and hears everything everyone is doing. There is a telescreen placed in every corner of every room. This telescreen could not be turned off. If you are heard thinking of something the Big Brother does not want you to think then you will be punished by the Thought Police. This punishment could be death or a sentence of 25 years in a forced labor camp. You had to keep your feelings to yourself and try to hide them from the Thought Police. ââ¬Å"Your worst enemy is your own nervous system,â⬠(page 67) this is something you hear all the time from criminals who say their self conscious got to them. There are three slogans of the party, theses slogans are War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength. Not everyone is a member of the Party. Only about 20% of the people of Oceania are involved in the party. Most people living in Oceania are living in slums. The people are given a small amount of coupons to trade in for clothing, food or anything else they needed. On page 8 we find out the 4 most important buildings in Oceania. They are the four Ministries, which are all government buildings. They are the Ministry of Peace, which is concerned with war. The Ministry of Truth is concerned with news, entertainment, education and the arts. The Ministry of Love maintains law and order. The Ministry of Plenty is responsible for economic affairs. Each ministry had its own concerns and problems. I agree w... ...fter saying this, Winston is eventually let back into the world to work and live. They gave him a new look and a new job. Winston looked different because of all the scars and bruises he had suffered from being beaten in the jail. Winston then begins to love his new life and enjoys every minute of it. He is also now a good member of the party, doing everything he is suppose to, and not thinking for himself. He is thinking just like the party had taught him. He had found Julia at a restaurant, and they went to the park to talk. They both had turned against each other and decided it was best for them not to be involved anymore. It was mostly because they did not have the physical attraction to each other anymore as they used to. They both had changed because of being beaten in jail. A few days later an announcement comes onto the telescreen saying they have won the war and defeated Eurasia. People crowded into the street to cheer on the victory of the party. Winston jumped for joy and thatââ¬â¢s when the Thought Police had seen on the telescreen and had realized that Winston was cured and a real member of the party. He had loved Big Brother and then he was shot from behind and killed.

HSM Personal Leadership Plan Essay
Trinity Services, Inc. is where I am currently employed, as an independent living counselor (ILC), in an adult learning program. Trinity Services, Inc. is an established, community based, not for profit, non-sectarian human services organization that provides an array of quality services and supports for people who have developmental disabilities. The mission statement of Trinity Services, Inc. s, ââ¬Å"Trinity strives to be a leader in providing the highest quality, socially responsible and cost effective services and supports to persons with disabilities, so that they might achieve their full potential and have the opportunity to live full and abundant lives. â⬠As an ILC in an adult learning program, I work on teaching and training of life skills. I also provide individualized assistance and coaching with personal care, activities of daily living, transportation, and other areas of need. At Trinity Services, Inc. the preferred and minimum qualifications to gain employment as an ILC are a high school diploma or GED. I truly enjoy my job and find it to be extremely rewarding but I would really love to have the ability to help the clients even more by obtaining a leadership position at Trinity Services, Inc. such as a program coordinator or case manager; two job positions that require a Bachelorââ¬â¢s degree that relates to the human services management field. It is my current job and the people I serve that have inspired me to go back to school and get my degree. Obtaining a leadership position in a human services organization means that I will have the ability to be a better advocate for the clients I assist but along with that comes more responsibility which is why ethics, morals, and, values are so important in the field of human services. As a leader in a human services organization the moral responsibilities I would have include ââ¬Å"upholding the law, fulfilling the legitimate duties of my position, observing relevant codes of ethics and otherwise abiding by generally held moral principles such as honesty and not knowingly doing harmâ⬠(Teehankee, 2007, para. 3). Leaders of human services organizations operate in a variety of ways and perform many different roles. For example, these leaders have responsibilities to the clients, community and society, colleagues, and also to their profession and employers (ââ¬Å"National Organization for Human Servicesâ⬠, n. ). The National Organization for Human Services (n. d) website has two sections pertaining to ethical standards for human service professionals. The first section covers standards for human service professionals while the second section covers standards for human service educators. These ethical guidelines were designed so that human service leaders and educators could use it to assist them in making ethical decisions when faced with difficult ethical dilemmas. Practicing ethical leadership is important because it sets a good example for the organization and the community, builds trust, brings credibility and respect to the leader as well as the organization, leads to collaboration, and creates a good climate within the organization (Rabinowitz, 2013). My moral vision as a leader in a human services organization is to carry out Trinity Services, Inc. mission statement, and utilize the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) (2013) code of ethics and the National Organization of Human Services (NOHS) (n. ) ethical standards for human service professionals to the best of my abilities in order to guide me as an ethical human service leader. Although I donââ¬â¢t believe it will always be possible to specifically use these as guidelines since every situation is different and poses different challenges, however I do believe that as long as I have a good understanding of ethics and what ethical leadership means then I will be able to make the most ethical decisions no matter what obstacles I encounter. For me, it would be a dream come true to see each and every person who has developmental disabilities live in a safe environment where they are respected, treated fairly and are free from abuse and neglect. They are human beings who have rights and should be able to make choices, have friends, and participate in the community without experiencing discrimination of any kind. I hope to make my dream become a reality for people who have developmental disabilities and I believe as a leader in a human services organization I will have the tools to make that happen. There are many different ways that leadership can affect the overall performance of a human services organization and I believe it is important to be an ethical leader to improve performance. Placing the well-being of clients above all other issues is a significant moral responsibility of an ethical leader.

Satirical Mouthpiece in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Typically when you hear ââ¬Å"19th century literature,â⬠you think of the formal and monotonous, yet gramatically and contextually correct writing of authors such as Charles Dickens and Harriet Beecher Stowe; but one author stood out among them and his name was Mark Twain. Twain started a new trend of including new aspects of writing into his pieces such as voice, dialect, and satire. The one particular book written by Mark Twain that is known to be the beginning of American literature called The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, contains all three of these aspects. In the book, Twain uses the main character and narrator, Huck, to utilize his voice, dialect, and satire. Huck serves as a satirical mouthpiece for the authorââ¬â¢s attitude by fulfilling his role as the naive narrator. There is a specific passage in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that accurately portrays the satire that Twain is trying to bestow upon the reader involving a character by the name of Emmeline Grangerford, a sentimental artist. Huck is inspecting the art of Emmeline and expressing his feelings about them in the text. If you read Huckââ¬â¢s explanations without examining the underlying meanings you will find that Huck is completely clueless as to the artistsââ¬â¢ sentimental intentions. He evaluates one picture called ââ¬Å"Shall I Never See Thee More Alasâ⬠by describing a woman ââ¬Å"under a weeping willowâ⬠(Twain 119) in a graveyard, another picture with a woman ââ¬Å"crying into a handkerchiefâ⬠(Twain 119), and yet another with a crying woman about to jump off a bridge. All three of these illustrations are obvious cliches of sentimental art of the 19th century. Huck looks at the images and simply sees ââ¬Å"nice picturesâ⬠(Twain 119), not realizing the intent of the artist, Emmeline. This is an excellent example of Huckââ¬â¢s role as the naive narrator. His lack of understanding provides a completely different take on the art than Mark Twain actually feels. Twainââ¬â¢s main intention of the passage is to poke fun at the sentimentalistsââ¬â¢ artwork. He includes Huckââ¬â¢s explanations such as bulges on a dress ââ¬Å"like a cabbageâ⬠(Twain 119), and ââ¬Å"black slippers, like a chiselâ⬠(Twain 119) to mock the sentimental art which was poplular at the time that he wrote the book. Writing the passage in Huckââ¬â¢s point of view allowed Twain to add satire to the story by making Huckââ¬â¢s comments so cliche and ridiculous that it is obvious that this is not actually the way that Twain feels about the sentimental artwork. This is why the character of Huck, being as clueless as he is in the book, is necessary for him to serve as the authorââ¬â¢s satirical mouthpiece. Huckleberry Finn is certainly not the typical narrator of a book. To understand the context of the writing, one must decipher what is actually occuring in the story and what Huck thinks is occuring because of his role as the naive narrator. Although this makes the book more difficult to comprehend, it also makes it more interesting to read and allows the author, Mark Twain, to include such factors of voice, dialect, and satire. The narratorââ¬â¢s conception of the storyline is extremely important to the book. Huck serves as a satirical mouthpiece for the authorââ¬â¢s attitude by fulfilling his role as the naive narrator.

The Beatles Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
The Beatles - Essay Example Two of the Beatles are now dead, but the icon of "Beatles" remains, having moved from a Modernist, central position within world culture to a postmodernist, ironic placement as a mixture of nostalgia and commercialism. When The Beatles first appeared on music scene in 1963, the idea of a musical band being anything more than simply a group of young men (and sometimes women) who played live and who would, if successful, release records, had yet to be invented. Pop groups, even those that became phenomenally successful in a manner never seen before, were clearly definable, and limited Modernist figures. A clear delineation could be made between the pop group and the musical culture/general world in which they performed and lived. In a modernist and semiotic sense, the relationship between signifier ("The Beatles") and signified (the live performances and records) was fairly clear (Barthes, 1978). But as early as the late stages of Beatlemania in 1964, a postmodern uncertainty was coming into the sign "Beatles" as a slippery commutability between signifier and signified started to occur. Essentially "The Beatles" became a signifier for much more than the signified of their music. The hysterical "love" that surrounded the four young from Liverpool reached such extreme and massive proportions that some seriously suggested that the fans were suffering from some kind of mass hysteria. "The Beatles", to put them in a Freudian context, were bringing out an id within their fans that dominated their ego and superego. While the raw sexuality of Beatles music was making the previous icon of rebellion, Elvis Presley, seem relatively tame by comparison, their success within Britain caused them to become icons of the mainstream establishment as well. In 1965 Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the MBE, a civil honor, on the band. Their dominance of the music industry - on April 4th 1964 they had all top five records on the Billboard Top 100 (Spitz, 2006) - had apparently led them to become icons of that most traditional of British institutions, the monarchy. When John Lennon told the Royal Command Audience that they should applaud, only the rich should jangle their jewelry the "servants" of the Queen who had been commanded to perform for her (and who bowed so low) were now ironically commenting upon the British class system. The move to postmodern irony had already started before the famous mop-tops were grown long, the Beatles stopped performing live, and the concept studio album took over. The role of the Beatles as something more than merely a pop group began to take on far greater proportions as the Sixties rolled on. Thus they were seen as having snubbed the President of the Philippines' wife and barely escaped the country with their lives, and John Lennon caused a huge uproar by his less-than-diplomatic, but probably correct assertion that the Beatles were at the time more popular than Jesus (Spitz, 2006). Much of 1970's fashion can be traced to a single Beatles album cover: that of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Thus the sheer range of culture and society that the Beatles influenced eventually drowned out the importance of their music. An ideal symbol of this tendency was the perhaps apocryphal moment when the band stopped playing at a gig only for the audience not to notice because of the noise they were

Thousand Pieces of Gold Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Thousand Pieces of Gold - Essay Example She made desperate efforts to escape, finally succeeded and hid in a bat cave from where she was caught. At that juncture Ding said to her, ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you understand, you cannot escape your fate? (77) And finally she was sold a bar owner in America, got a new name Polly and finally the neighbor who won her in a card game, married her and Polly spent the rest of her life taking care of him and her community. A direct response to the question: ââ¬Å"Do you think Ding was right . . . ââ¬Å"(my thesis). No, Ding is absolutely wrong. A series of incidents of suffering in the life of an individual should not be quoted to condemn fate, which normally works to a pre-determined design, but can be challenged successfully by the will power of an individual. Fate (destiny) has two types of movements. Forward movement and lateral movement. Forward movement is that movement over which an individual does not own control. For example, petrol/gas in a motor vehicle is an example of forward movement. This is the source-energy without which the vehicle cannot move an inch, howsoever latest and costly the model is. The chauffeur driving the vehicle is the example of the lateral movement. He controls the movements of the vehicle with self-effort; he can take it in the direction and the speed that he wants. When negligent, accidents may happen. In the present case, that Lalu was born as the daughter of a rich farmer, that her father suffered heavy business losses, that she was sold for two bags of rice to bandits, that she was sold to a Madam and was sexually exploited, were instances of forward movements. That she made efforts to escape, that she learnt the working knowledge of English, that she decided to marry the man who freed her from the bondage of slavery and ultimately she chose to take care of her man and the community to which she belonged were the examples of lateral movement of the fate. Her fighting qualities and will power were components of her fate of late ral movement. In this part of her life she became the creator of her fate, not the victim. The working of the fate in oneââ¬â¢s life is a complicated process difficult to understand by the power of reasoning alone, but an individual need to exert to the utmost by the exercise of the will power to emerge as the ultimate victor and seek freedom from the clutches of fate. If perfect happiness does not fall to oneââ¬â¢s lot, one needs to learn to live life with the available happiness. Lalu changed her life with her own strength and intelligence and through her fighting qualities of head and heart. 3) 2 examples from the novel itself that support the thesis. Example 1 Through the trials and tribulations of the young but spirited girl Lalu, McCunn highlights the importance of freedom in the life of an individual. Lalu goes through the ordeal of trades of her body from bandits, houses of sexual pleasure and finally to the bar owner in the Gold Mountains, and she understands her wort h and the importance of her body from the point of view of the secular world, and that of her spirit by self-assessment. She has the good estimate of the disposition of wicked society towards a helpless women caught in the wrong place. Lalu laments, ââ¬Å"So long as the woman satisfies that muscle below their belt, they donââ¬â¢t care about anything elseâ⬠(95)Her reply to the remark from the comrade from the auction house

Should same-sex marriage be legalized Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Should same-sex marriage be legalized - Essay Example The reproduction objective of sex can be met only through the sex between a male and female whereas in order to achieve psychological pleasure, sex can be performed even without a gender barrier. Lesbianism and Gayism were established in the contemporary society because of the changing concepts about sexuality. Same sex marriage is a common thing nowadays in most of the advanced societies (See appendix for more details). The call for legalization of same sex marriage is increasing day by day. ââ¬Å"As of Sep. 15, 2010, gay marriage is allowed in five US states (MA, CT, IA, VT, and NH) and the District of Columbia whereas 30 states have constitutional amendments banning gay marriageâ⬠(Should gay marriage be legal?). This paper critically analyses same sex marriage and tries to answer the question; ââ¬Å"Should same sex marriage be legalized or notâ⬠ââ¬Å"A benefit to heterosexual society of gay marriage is the fact that the commitment of a marriage means the participants are discouraged from promiscuous sexâ⬠(Bidstrup). Proponents of same sex marriage argue that sex related diseases can be reduced a lot by encouraging same sex marriage. Normal sex has little meaning in same sex marriage. In normal marriages, sex is often performed even without the mutual agreement. Either the husband or wife, at times performs sexual activities mechanically in order to satisfy the partner. Such mechanical or forceful sex relations are less in same sex marriages. Same sex married couples always perform sexual activities with the mutual consent and hence both the partners can enjoy the sexual pleasure whenever they engage in sexual activities. Sex has nothing to do with the reproduction. Reproduction has only secondary importance in sexual life considering the importance of psychological pleasure derived out of the sex activities. Psychological dimensions of sex are more important than the physiological or reproductive dimensions of sex. Sexual
